About

We report what matters. Nothing else.

The Signal is an independent journalism platform dedicated to rigorous, original reporting on the stories that shape how we live, work, and understand the world. We cover business, culture, politics, technology, and society — not because they trend, but because they matter.

Founded in 2024, The Signal was built on a simple conviction: that there is a large audience of intelligent readers who are tired of noise, clickbait, and agenda-driven coverage, and who want journalism that treats them as adults.

What we believe

We believe that the best journalism is specific, not vague. It names names, cites documents, and shows its work. It holds power accountable without losing sight of complexity. It tells you what happened, why it matters, and what comes next.

We believe that a small publication with high standards beats a large one with low ones. We publish fewer stories than most outlets. Every story we publish is one we're prepared to stand behind completely.

Editorial independence

The Signal has no corporate owner, no investor with editorial influence, and no advertising relationships that could compromise our reporting. We are funded entirely by readers — through newsletter subscriptions and direct reader support.

Our editorial decisions are made by our editorial team alone. Sponsors and advertisers have no input into what we cover, how we cover it, or what we publish.

Who we are

The Signal is edited by Robert Turpin, who oversees all editorial decisions and reporting. Our contributors include journalists, researchers, and domain experts across our coverage areas.

We are based in the United States and cover stories of national and international significance.
